Philippa Adrych

I read Classics as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford, where I developed an enthusiasm for Roman history, and Roman religion in particular. I am now a doctoral student, supervised by Jas’ Elsner, and working on the Roman worship of Mithras. My thesis examines the modern scholarship on key aspects of Mithraic ritual and belief, and compares this with what we can see in the archaeological evidence from around the Roman Empire. The Empires of Faith project, with its emphasis on the archaeological and artistic remains of religions, combined with a strong historiographic approach, is therefore something with which I was keen to be involved.
